MELT Your Stress Away

The MELT Method is a simple self-treatment method that eliminates chronic pain, improves performance, and decreases the "stuck stress" caused by the repetitive postures and movements of everyday living. MELT was created by New York City manual therapist Sue Hitzmann, and it's now being taught worldwide to groups and individuals by hundreds of instructors trained by Hitzmann. I trained directly with Sue and am thrilled to be passing on this message of self-care. The MELT Method is the very first Hands-off Bodywork® method developed for the general public as a self-care tool to prevent and relieve chronic pain. It’s an essential addition to any wellness or fitness routine. In this introductory session we will learn beginning MELT sequences that can be done in a few minutes anytime during your day.

A Time to Breathe Together

Please join me for a yoga flow (a sequence of yoga poses) class where we will work on lots of moments of just breathing. This class is for anyone new to practicing yoga and for those who practice frequently. We will practice several yoga flow sequences and then give you time to practice your own. There will be time for you to share your yoga flow if you would like to. Yoga is a practice not a performance. Yoga is a chance to play with your body and to understand it better. Between yoga flows will we spend lots of time being still and just breathing.

The Centering Power of Sentence Diagramming

Sentence diagramming is a system, created in the late 19th century, of making visible the architecture of a sentence: its subject, verb, clauses, phrases, objects modifiers. The great American writer Gertrude Stein is quoted as having said, "I really do no know that anything has ever been more exciting than diagramming sentences." And this was a woman who lived quite an exciting life!  Whether you love or fear grammar, you will be welcome in this seminar.  We'll learn a little about the history of sentence diagramming, but mostly we will try to lose ourselves in the excitement of entering sentences and following their currents and tributaries until we find ourselves at one with the language, centered.

The contemporary view of assessment defines it as "an ongoing process of setting clear goals for student learning and measuring progress toward those goals," yet research suggests that for the majority of lessons, no evidence exists by which a teacher could gauge how well students are progressing in their learning. This fact has important implications for thinking about equity, access, and culturally responsive teaching. Reflecting on adjustments we made last year, the presenter will discuss why it is essential for educators to take a new perspective on the need to incorporate assessment and data into our daily instruction. As a group, we will explore several effective integrated assessment strategies, including some low-prep/no-prep tools that can be used in the classroom tomorrow morning.

Science classes can also be a place to address DE&I! We will present the current state of these topics in our senior WHS elective, Biotechnology and Personalized Genetics. We will feature a lesson on cancer and genetics, taught through a social justice lens, as an exemplar. We will break into small groups to brainstorm how DE&I can be incorporated into some of the science units you teach in your classes.
